One Room Challenge: Week 1 - Home Office

Updated: Aug 31, 2022

First off - What is the One Room Challenge (ORC)?

The One Room Challenge is a 6-week long event that brings together DIYers, influencers, and designers to finish one space in that allowed time. Along the way you share your progress, design inspiration, and encourage others in their design.

For this year's challenge I am renovating our Home Office.

(Visit the rest of the ORC's designers for this event: www.oneroomchallenge.com/orc-blog)

The Background Story

When we bought our home in early 2020 the office was an afterthought. Sure we had a bookshelf and desk in there if needed but neither my husband or I ever did much work at home … enter: Covid + that WFH life. The plan was to get the office started much sooner than this, then life happened. And by life I mean a baby. Trying to do any manual labor with a watermelon sized bump is no easy task. fast forward to now and we are finally ready to get this office reno going!

The Before

This office is lacking organization, hidden storage, and a lot of design. It's become a space where we put things that don't belong anywhere else in the house.

The Design

I’m going for a mid-century Art Deco vibe in the office.. thinking Mad Men inspo. Moody colored built ins, heavy on the gold accents, a geometric print rug, and a warm modern desk.

The Plan

  1. Get the built ins installed: These are going to be wall to wall built ins with cabinets at the bottom of each units and shelving up to the ceiling.

  2. Put in a set of French doors: These are so needed in this space. Our house is so open with a 2-story foyer and living room so closing this room off from the sound and chaos is necessary.

  3. The Nitty Gritty: Caulk, Wood Fill, Sand, Paint.

  4. The Fun Part: Decorating the shelves, filling the cabinets with books, setting up a new desk and work space, and creating a gallery wall
